Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (1910–2012) was a towering Haredi Torah scholar and the leading posek (halachic authority) of the Lithuanian (non-Hasidic) Ashkenazi world in his generation. Born in Šiauliai, Lithuania, he immigrated to Jerusalem at age 12. He became renowned for his extraordinary diligence, studying Torah 16–20 hours a day for decades. He served as a dayan (judge) on the Supreme Rabbinical Court before becoming the spiritual leader of the Degel HaTorah party and the paramount authority for Lithuanian Haredi Jewry.Known for his strict yet deeply learned rulings, humility, and vast knowledge, Rav Elyashiv was consulted by rabbis and communities worldwide. He passed away in Jerusalem at age 102, with hundreds of thousands attending his funeral.
